Supporting Healthcare & Medical Students

A key aim of INS is to advance education by supporting medical and healthcare students in developing their knowledge, skills and empathy for people with neurological conditions and their carers.

Medical Students

INS provides training for approximately 400 students each year from St. George’s University of London. The training provided to students is closely aligned with their curriculum and national training standards. Various modules and topics are covered, including:

  • Neurological conditions: symptoms, management and living long term with a condition
  • Inter-professional working: how an integrated approach provides a truly client-centred and holistic support service
  • Rehabilitation models and processes
  • The aims of INS and services provided

We encourage clients and carers to become expert tutors and to use their knowledge and skills to support our teaching programme – we now have over 35 of them enthusiastically involved in delivering talks to students. They lead case studies and develop care package scenarios, and facilitate rehabilitation sessions with the students as participants.

The 2011-2012 sessions are being held at All Saints Church, Campbell Road, Twickenham, TW2 5BY. Map How to get there

Through this programme, two St George’s medical students were inspired to carry out research projects on aspects of INS’ work with service users and their carers. See their posters summarising these projects here. Since these projects were completed INS’ methodologies and assessment tools have evolved, the client base has increased and additional services are offered.

Healthcare Students

As part of INS’ aim to advance education and as part of all healthcare professionals’ responsibility, INS provides regular, practical education opportunities by offering placements throughout the year for occupational therapy, physiotherapy and social work students.
